I (We) finally did it!

The statistics surrounding mental health are overwhelming – 1 in 4 adults in the United States had a mental health disorder in the past year—most commonly anxiety or depression—and 1 in 17 had a serious mental illness. Mental health disorders also affect children and adolescents at an increasingly alarming rate; in 2010, 1 in 5 children in the United States had a mental health disorder. The suicide rate increased 23.9% between 2007 and 2017.*

Although alarming these statistics only tell the numbers try, behind every one of those statistics is a person who may have once been suffering in silence, and felt completely alone. 

Having struggled with a mental illness for many years, I realized that although information exists from mental. Health professionals, we don’t often hear the side of those who suffer from a mental illness. I wanted to find a way to share my journey, as well as shed some light on mental health while providing hope for fellow sufferers and information for their loved ones. Partnering with a dear friend, we worked out the kinks and, we finally did it. We started a podcast! 

Sunflower Living is a podcast that shares the journey of two friends, as we navigate life with a mental illness. In conversation with each other, we’re determined to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health. 

After months of planning and talking about it, we finally recorded, edited and gave up our striving for perfection and have launched the darn thing. This is, as with most things in life, a work in progress. We have opened our lives up to the world in an attempt to be a light in the darkness.

    Well done! I like the disclaimer at the end, that you’re not health professionals. That’s the best part of the conversation for me, that it’s between friends sharing, providing support to each other. Sometimes you just need a compassionate listener and it’s not always a health professional. It sounded like many of the conversations I’ve had with friends about this; and so I found it very relatable and easy to listen to. Also picked up tips on how to be supportive to others 🙂
